Trend Report: Coastal Grandma

Embracing the Coastal Grandma Trend: Timeless, Tranquil, and Effortlessly Chic

The latest fashion and design trend coined as "Coastal Grandma" is more than just a look, it’s a timeless feeling. Inspired by the serenity of coastal living and the warmth and elegance of your Grandma (or stylish Aunt), Coastal Grandma brings together natural elements, soft textures, and a laid-back aesthetic. This style embodies the balance of comfort and elegance, making it an ideal choice for anyone looking to bring tranquility and comfort to a space, without sacrificing style. In this edition of “Trend Alert”, our expert interior designers have identified the key design principles to help you embrace the Coastal Grandma look.

Introduce Textures: Woven, Linen, and Natural Leather

Mixing classic textures brings a sense of effortless curation and is an essential component of the Coastal Grandma style. Incorporating woven rugs, like the Bold collection by Hella Jongerius, linen cushions, and natural leather furniture adds richness and tactile variety. These textures create a layered, welcoming feel that invites you to relax.

Lightweight Light Fixtures Provide a Sense of Balance

Opt for lightweight light fixtures such as woven pendants or simple, airy paper lanterns. These fixtures not only illuminate your space but also provide a sense of balance. The delicate designs of these fixtures complement the soft, natural feel of the Coastal Grandma aesthetic.

Add Pattern with Accent Tile from Tilebar

Accent tiles with a medium-scale pattern, such as organic geometric designs or soft florals, are a fantastic way to add personality to a room. A subtle and classic pattern introduces a personality without overwhelming the space, creating a refined yet playful look. The Parma collection by Tilebar is an excellent example of this aesthetic.

Use Organically Shaped Elements that Nod to Coastal Nature

Curves and flowing lines reflect the organic beauty of coastal nature. Incorporate furniture and décor with soft, rounded edges that mimic the fluid forms of seashells, driftwood, or ocean waves. These elements offer visual interest while staying true to the coastal aesthetic.

Pair Warm Neutrals with Soft Blues and Greens

Warm neutrals like sand, ivory, and beige form the foundation of the Coastal Grandma palette. Pair these hues with soft blues and greens to evoke the tranquility of sea and sky. This color scheme works beautifully throughout any room, whether you're designing a cozy living space or a calming hybrid workspace.

Create a Focal Point with a Wood Feature Wall

A standout wood feature wall adds depth and character to any room. By layering tone-on-tone wood elements, you create a visually interesting focal point while keeping the aesthetic calm and cohesive. Whether it's shiplap, weathered wood, or a simple light oak paneling, the natural warmth of wood brings an organic touch that resonates with the coastal theme.

Mix and Match Patterns

To add interest to the Coastal Grandma aesthetic, consider incorporating mixed textiles into your design. Patterned fabrics can introduce subtle layers of interest without overpowering the space. Try blending soft stripes (like the In Stitches pattern by Knoll Textiles) gingham, or floral prints with more organic woven patterns to create a relaxed yet polished look. This approach keeps the space feeling fresh and airy while adding just the right amount of personality and sophistication to the coastal-inspired palette.

Coastal Motifs Add the Perfect Finishing Touch

Whether it's subtle patterns or coastal-inspired artwork, coastal motifs infuse a space with that relaxed, beachside feeling. Although these round out the Coastal Grandma feel, you don’t need to make your space beach-themed to achieve this trending look. The beauty of Coastal Grandma lies in bringing a gentle reminder of nature into your space.

Embracing the Coastal Grandma Trend: Timeless, Tranquil, and Effortlessly Chic
By Madalyn Norman September 26, 2024
Our team recently attended NeoCon 2024 at the historic Merchandise Mart and Design Days at Fulton Market in Chicago, where we delved into the latest advancements and trends in interior design. As one of the premier commercial design industry events, NeoCon is a pivotal forum for unveiling fresh ideas and pioneering solutions. While in Chicago, we gathered valuable insights into influential interior design strategies, particularly for an upcoming project with a private client and other upcoming ventures. We also met with this client to discuss their major office renovation scheduled for 2025. During our time at the event, we encountered a diverse array of trends that are shaping the future of interior spaces; from bold jewel tones that add a luxurious touch to interior spaces, to biophilic design elements that seamlessly blend the outdoors with the indoor environment. Let’s dive into some of the styles we love from this year’s convention. OUTDOOR & BIOPHILIC DESIGN ELEMENTS The trend of bringing the outdoors in and encouraging indoor dwellers to spend more time outside is embodied in the integration of planters, natural materials, natural shapes, and versatile and comfortable outdoor furniture. By incorporating lush greenery and natural elements like teak wood and stone accents into indoor and outdoor spaces, designers create seamless transitions that blur the distinction between interior and exterior environments. This approach not only enhances visual continuity but also promotes a sense of well-being by fostering connections with nature.
